The Distribution of Absorbing Column Densities among Seyfert 2 Galaxies
نویسندگان
چکیده
We use hard X-ray data for an " optimal " sample of Seyfert 2 galaxies to derive the distribution of the gaseous absorbing column densities among obscured active nuclei in the local Universe. Of all Seyfert 2 galaxies in the sample, 75% are heavily obscured (N H > 10 23 cm −2) and about half are Compton thick (N H > 10 24 cm −2). Intermediate type 1.8–1.9 Seyferts are characterized by an average N H much lower than " strict " Seyfert 2s. No correlation is found between N H and the intrinsic luminosity of the nuclear source. This N H distribution has important consequences for the synthesis of the cosmic X-ray background. Also, the large fraction of Compton thick objects implies that most of the obscuring gas is located within a radius of a few 10 pc from the nucleus.

X-ray Evidence for Multiple Absorbing Structures in Seyfert Nuclei
We have discovered a correlation between the X-ray absorbing column densities within Seyfert galaxies and the relative alignment between the central engines and their host galactic disks. This correlation carries several implications for Seyfert unification models. (1) In addition to small-scale circumnuclear absorbers, there are absorbing systems associated with the host galactic plane that ar...

Having conducted a search for the λ∼1.3 cm (22GHz) water vapor line towards galaxies with nuclear activity, large nuclear column densities or high infrared luminosities, we present H2O spectra for NGC2273, UGC5101, and NGC3393 with isotropic luminosities of 7, 1500, and 400 L⊙. The H2O maser in UGC5101 is by far the most luminous yet found in an ultraluminous infrared galaxy. NGC3393 reveals th...
متن کاملDynamics of Warm Absorbing Gas in Seyfert Galaxies: Ngc 5548
A hydromagnetic (MHD) wind from a clumpy molecular accretion disk is invoked to explain observations of warm absorbing gas at UV and X-ray energies in Seyfert 1 galaxies. This paper focuses on two important issues: (1) compatibility of kinematics and dynamics of an MHD wind with the observed properties of warm absorbers; and (2) the relationship between the UV and X-ray absorbing gases. We prov...

We discuss the spectral properties of a sample of type-2 Seyfert galaxies based upon the analysis of ASCA data. In this paper we consider the sources for which the X-ray spectra appear to be dominated by the nuclear continuum, transmitted through a large column of absorbing material. We find that both Seyfert-2 galaxies and NELGs show iron Kα line profiles indicative of reprocessing of nuclear ...
متن کاملThe effect of bars on the obscuration of active nuclei
We present evidence for a strong correlation between the gaseous absorbing column density towards type 2 Seyfert nuclei and the presence of a stellar bar in their host galaxies. Strongly barred Seyfert 2 galaxies have an average NH that is two orders of magnitude higher than non-barred Seyfert 2s. More than 80% of Compton thick (NH > 1024cm−2) Seyfert 2s are barred. This result indicates that s...
